About LATE-AYA
Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) living with and beyond cancer face a distinct set of challenges, including increased risks of secondary cancers, cardiovascular diseases, infertility, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
Oncology programs that deliver care to Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) typically provide youth living beyond cancer with individualised care plans at the end of treatment to guide follow-up with their primary care providers. However, adherence to these plans is often low, influenced by factors such as age, sex, type of cancer treatment received, and socioeconomic conditions.
LATE-AYA will focus on preventive health behaviours, psychological support, and social reintegration, delivering personalised care through digital interventions. It will contribute to long-term quality of life improvements, facilitate early detection of late effects, and provide data-driven insights on the impact of lifestyle choices on health outcomes.
Our Mission
🎯 Supporting young people
We aim to create a personalised, digital follow-up environment that helps improve quality of life and health outcomes for young people with lived experience of cancer.
💡 Driving innovation
We bring together smart sensing technologies, artificial intelligence–driven risk prediction and chatbot-supported coaching and education to help young people better understand their health, make informed choices, and feel supported in their follow-up journey.
🏆 Achieving impact through excellence
Our experience in biomedical research and digital innovation enables us to develop impactful, evidence-based solutions that respond to the needs of young people living beyond cancer.
🔮 Looking to the future
We aspire to standardise digital cancer care and enable data-driven follow-up for young people living beyond cancer across Europe.
Our Goals
LATE-AYA will develop and test a digital phenotyping, counselling, and support environment in a two-stage multicentric clinical study. This aims to support Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) and their caregivers manage the late effects (LE) of cancer and adapt to life beyond cancer. This approach will take into account differences in age, sex, treatment and socio-economic context that might support the development of evidence-based guidelines.
LATE-AYA will provide person-centred support for monitoring and follow-up of late effects, promote preventive health behaviours, offer psychological and social support, and deliver health information to empower adolescents and young adults in their care and help them better manage their health and wellbeing.
By using smartphone and smartwatch sensors to collect large amounts of unconventional data, LATE-AYA will model the development of late effects and health-related quality of life trajectories across different subgroups of Adolescents and Young Adults, informing personalised treatment and follow-up strategies.
Our Objectives
LATE-AYA will develop a “personalised digital follow-up environment” that:
🔍 Early Identification
Allows early identification of Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) living beyond cancer who experience side effects that impact their Quality of Life (QoL) and proposes personalised interventions;
📊 Data Collection
Collects large sets of biometric, behavioural and social activity data using smart device sensors (mobile apps and smartwatches);
🤖 AI Analysis
Analyses the collected data (through artificial intelligence–based behavioural models) to predict the risk of late effects onset and relevant Quality of Life (QoL) trends;
💬 Self-Management Support
Supports Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) in self-management, empowerment and education through a personalised set of chatbot-supported messaging services.
